Dialogue Between Xuemo and International Scholars (Session 6): “Embodied Going Global” and Spiritual Expedition — Xuemo and Yan Jiexiong in Dialogue on Suosalang, Exploring the Global Expression of Chinese Epics

On April 26, 2026, the 6th session of the “Dialogue between Xuemo and International Scholars” series was successfully held via zoom. The event was jointly organized by the World Literature Union and the Xue Mo Foundation, attracting renowned scholars, sinologists, and readers from China, the United States, Canada, and other countries.

The renowned writer Xuemo, moderator Chen Yanjin, and scholars including Professor Yan Jiexiong, Professor Riccardo Moratto from Tongji University, and Associate Professor Yang Min from Bowling Green State University (USA) engaged in in-depth dialogue. The discussion focused on the creative essence, artistic achievements, and global significance of Xuemo’s epic Suosalang.

Xuemo on International Literary Awards: The Importance of “Participation” and “Entering the System”

At the beginning of the dialogue, Xuemo, who had just returned from the New York Big Book Awards ceremony, shared his reflections on receiving the award. He stated that he does not place great importance on domestic or international literary prizes, viewing them instead as a form of “participation.”Through his direct involvement in international literary events such as the New York Book Awards, the Oxford Literary Festival, and the Guadalajara International Book Fair, he has been able to gain an in-depth understanding of the “rules of the game” within the Western literary and publishing system, thereby enabling more overseas publishers, writers, and readers to become familiar with his works and ideas.

Xuemo believes that the literary event system in the United States is highly structured and practically oriented, effectively bringing writers into the market. In contrast, Chinese writers going global should not limit themselves to Chinese-speaking communities; rather, they must continuously participate and engage with mainstream cultural and publishing systems in order to achieve truly effective international communication.

This model of “embodied going global,” emphasizing physical presence and active participation, offers valuable practical experience for the international dissemination of Chinese literature.

The Award-Winning Wild Fox Ridge Draws Attention; Dialogue Turns to Suosalang

The award-winning work in this session was the English edition of Wild Fox Ridge. Moderator Chen Yanjin briefly introduced the novel as a landmark work marking a “return” in Xuemo’s creative trajectory. The dialogue then shifted toward his more monumental epic work—Suosalang. Chen Yanjin noted that this work signifies Xuemo’s transformation from a Chinese writer into a writer with truly global literary stature.

Yan Jiexiong: The Integration of Chinese Civilization and Archetypal Writing

Professor Yan Jiexiong of Central South University delivered a keynote presentation titled “The Integration of Chinese Civilization and Archetypal Epic Structures.” He argued that Suosalang is a “timeless masterpiece” destined to enter the coordinates of world literature, and may be regarded as the first modern epic written in the Chinese language.

He summarized his reading experience across five dimensions:

一是作品蕴含了古老的“远征-回归”史诗原型结构;

二是其宏大的叙述具有古典史诗的缓慢与临近感;

三是成功融汇了儒、释、道中华文明精髓,尤其突出了“相由心生”的佛家智慧与大量心理描写;

四是在古老史诗框架中注入了现代词汇、人生哲理与人性表达,使之成为一部“现代史诗”;

1.   The work embodies the ancient epic archetype of “expedition–return.”

2.   Its grand narrative structure carries the slow rhythm and immersive proximity characteristic of classical epics.

3.   It successfully integrates the essence of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, especially highlighting the Buddhist insight that “form arises from mind,” along with extensive psychological depiction.

4.   It infuses modern vocabulary, life philosophy, and humanistic expression into an ancient epic framework, thus becoming a “modern epic.”

5.   Its “vast and unrestrained” narrative style reflects a form of collective unconscious expression, in the Jungian sense, giving voice to millions.

In the dialogue session with Xuemo, Professor Yan Jiexiong raised a series of profound questions concerning the “mystical nature of the Suosalang planet,” the relationship between its two narrative threads, the artistic resources behind its creation, the integration of primordial thinking with modern elements, and its overarching theme of “eternity.”

In response, Xuemo stated that Suosalang is not a mere work of fiction; rather, its creation stems from long-term lived experience and spiritual practice. It is a form of “open, contemplative, and selfless writing,” a process in which spiritual realization is rendered into form and naturally manifested.

He further explained that the work both draws upon and transcends the limitations of character construction in earlier epic traditions, with its spiritual dimension rooted in the uniquely transcendent quality of Eastern wisdom. During the writing process, he intentionally adopts a “contemporary context” that can be understood by all humanity, in order to facilitate cross-cultural comprehension.

Regarding the pursuit of “eternity,” Xuemo interpreted it as a form of spiritual fulfillment, symbolizing an ideal dimension in the development of human civilization.

Riccardo Moratto and Yang Min: Civilizational Dialogue and the Dissolution of Authorial Subjectivity

ProfessorRiccardo Moratto of Tongji University focused on the integration of different civilizational traditions within the work.

In response, Xuemo stated that, in the process of creation, all elements of diverse civilizations have been fully internalized and transformed into his own “flesh and blood,” resulting in a vast, label-free sense of wholeness. He emphasized that the work is a manifestation of his own stages of spiritual and creative growth, and that the dialogue between scholars and readers also serves as nourishment for his evolving literary world.

Associate Professor Yang Min of Bowling Green State University approached the discussion from the perspective of authorial subjectivity, raising concerns about the tension between the dissolution of the self in spiritual cultivation and the construction of selfhood in literary narrative.

In response, Xuemo shared in detail that he once deliberately spent years “breaking down” his stylistically constructed authorial self until it gradually disappeared, allowing the characters in his works to “live on their own.”

He emphasized that when a writer dissolves the small self and merges into a larger whole, creation becomes a process of natural growth. Such writing, he argued, can generate universal empathy across racial and cultural boundaries, which is a key reason his works resonate with a broad global readership.

Conclusion: Literature as a Force Connecting the World as a Whole

Xuemo stated in his concluding remarks that every dialogue with scholars represents an encounter and mutual enrichment between different intellectual worlds. He expressed his hope that through works such as Suosalang and sustained international dialogues, literature can become a powerful force that connects humanity, awakens empathy, and fosters holistic harmony.

It is reported that the content of this dialogue series will be published in World Literature and will also be translated and introduced to the English-speaking world, further promoting in-depth exchange between contemporary Chinese literature and global academia.
