Get along well with spirituality

Deliverance is to get enlightened and let go.

Human has two kinds of affiliations, one comes from genes and we call it congenital attachment; the other is acquired from the environment and we call it discriminative attachment. Comparatively, the acquired attachment can be purified easily after enlightenment, and it is also referred as attachment that can be cleaned with insight or wisdom. But the congenital attachment can only be purified thoroughly after hard and long-term practice.

When a practitioner neither clings to the outside world nor takes the fake as genuine, when nothing can disturb his peace and happiness, he is liberated. Understanding the truth, and contemplating ones own behavior with this light of truth, and then it is the deliverance. We don’t need to look for deliverance other than this. Away from this truth, away from one’s own mind and soul, and seeking for deliverance other this, is to seek the Dharma from outside of heart, which is a wrong choice. All the Dharma outside of the mind is conditioned Dharma, which is as illusionary as the moon in the pond.

Some practitioners are simple-hearted, and they can easily have some religious experience during the meditation. Our forefather says, a straight mind is a place for awakening. The simple-hearted people don’t hold many concepts and they don’t like fancy things. They can feel the nature of spirit from the literature or things alike, and this spirit is just the most precious thing.

It is just like the situation of some young girls, who are easily attracted by appearance, for example, good looking, taste, etc. When they grows up and have more life experience, they won’t pay much attention on such things, for they have had intuitive wisdom and they pay more attention to nature of man.

After enlightenment, the joy will flow from inside out during the meditation. Although sometimes, something outside will play on their emotions, these emotions are just superficial and will be diluted quickly by the inner joy. Naropa made a pretty good metaphor about it and he said, after seeing the true nature, it is like the root of a big tree is cut off and the branches of deluded thoughts are going to wilt for sure.

The big tree that Naropa referred to is the tree of habitual thinking and the tree of Samsara. Although the tree will still be alive after its root is cut off, it will wither off gradually. It is to say, when a man understands the true nature, the tree of thinking and tree of Samsara will die off eventually. The process of dying off can be very long. But during this process, he understands more and the state gets more stable, as lots of habitual pattern has been purified. Some practitioner doesn’t have this purification process. It is called as being enlightened and achieving instantly, which means to be enlightened and achieve at the same time.

The brightness of enlightenment instantly dispels the acquired dark affiliations. But the congenital attachment only can be purified thoroughly after a long and diligent meditation,

For most of practitioners, the process of purification takes a very long time. Among the eighty-four great achievers and later achievers, some took twelve years to purify habitual practice. Afterward, the brightness they achieved would truly enlighten their lives. So, there is a common saying about the eighty four big achievers: after twelve years, they achieved the ultimate achievement of Mahamudra. Maybe, the twelve years is some how related to human’s life circle.

At the beginning of purification process, the practitioner needs to take retreat. But the simply seclusion is not enough; the purpose of seclusion is to stabilize the state achieved. Even after it gets stable, it is not ultimate achievement yet. We need to practice and tame the mind in real life. We need to inspect whether we can stay in ‘one taste’. The achievement won’t be unsurpassed without the practices in real life.

For example, Hui-Neng, after he got self-realized and enlightened, his work of pounding rice became a maintaining process, the fifth master taught his the Diamond sutra, which was the process of affirmation, and also showed him the true nature. Afterwards, he spent more than ten years along with the hunters. In that ten years, he maintained the state he achieved and meanwhile honed his mind. Ten years past, his achievement was very stable and nothing in this world could change his inherent wisdom of brightness and emptiness.

When a wise man watches the drama, he won’t be controlled by the play of dharma. Because he knows that everything is just show. If you are so into the drama, taking the show as real, you will be carried away by the drama. It is like, after watching a thriller, someone will be so frightened when going to the bathroom at night; he is afraid that a pale hand would reach out from the toilet. This is same as taken over by the delusion.

As the saying goes, lookers-on see more than player. It is the same case. The player is the one who sees illusion as real. He is not aware that everything is impermanent and nothing lasts forever. Their emotion will be controlled by some illusory phenomena. The onlookers are ones who are not into what is happening right now. So for them, everything they see is not more than a film, a dream. They will be irritated by it and won’t cling to it.

For some people in our time, although they know that certain things are not real, they still seek for other kind of liberation. Ultimately, it is because they don’t know what liberation is. As a matter of fact, the liberation is not a slogan, or specific phenomenon, it is a condition of life.

Many people in our time are looking for ‘deliverance’. In their eyes, the deliverance is maybe to, earn much money and tour around the world. But they don’t realize that even though they owned the money and took the tour around the world, how long could this happiness last? When they find that the deliverance they sought to for life-time will disappear in one week, and they will get lost in a new trouble, what should they do?

The biggest contradiction in life is that we are so much obsessed and nothing we cling to can last forever. Many people are obsessed to fortune or fame, or to love, beauty, and physical pleasure. What a pity, these things disappear quickly. For example, love, even you and your wife stick to each other, but one of they will die one after the other. Even the famous love story that were praised highly in history didn’t last, is there anything else can last?

When one understands nothing can last, he doesn’t need to seek for some liberation outside of heart any more. You are liberated upon this insight. Afterwards, you need to deal with the problems you see; which means “letting go”. It doesn’t mean doing anything. It means, no matter you do, don’t be obsessed to the result. For example, if you buy stocks, don’t be overjoyed when it rises, and don’t be depressed when it declines. When you have food to feed yourself, clothes to keep you warm, other things such as stocks shouldn’t have much influence to your life. Additionally, the fortune you have right now will become meaningless number when the impermanence catches you. Don’t be obsessed to anything in this world and stay un-wavered, and this is to ‘let-go’ and break away from attachment.

Meanwhile you still do your best with your life and work, but don’t let anything pull you out of the enlightenment, but well remain in the emptiness achieved after seeing the true nature. Totally focus on what you are doing at the moment. After the work is finished, you can relaxingly enjoy the beautiful flowers and amazing sunset, no matter what the result will be. This is it.
