A Brief History of the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism gives a detailed introduction of the meditation of the “pure illusory body”:
The meditation of the illusory body has two parts: 1) root status illusory body; 2) later attained status illusory body.
1) Root status illusory body. This has 3 parts. One: meditation methods of the three far departures in the preliminary practice status. Two: non-appearance meditation methods depending on the formal practice status of the three far departures. Three: appearance meditation methods depending on the formal practice status of the three far departures.
One: Meditation methods of three far departures in the preliminary practice status. The two yoga that can meditate Samadhi through non-appearance no drama explanation and appearance drama explanation depends on the vajra reciting of far departed language. What the vajra reciting depends on is the far departed body and the far departed heart arising from the far departed body. Moreover, this ritual regulation is deep teaching to lower root and middle root people.
Two: Non-appearance meditation methods depending on the formal practice status of the three far departures. In a silent place, Yogi who meditate non-appearance yoga continuously offer guru body, enjoyment, and kind root in the status of the three far departures as mentioned above, and enters concentration by sufficient religious faith and appreciation to eliminate drama explanation of the three times from their heart, making the two obstructive appearances extinguish by themselves due to blessing strength, the great seal therefore genuinely appears. According to this, meditate to recall the heart, further recalling the wind breath. From this the feeling inside the heart arises, i.e. from earth entering the water, smoke thus shows up; from water entering fire, sun flames therefore show up; from fire entering wind, firefly fire therefore shows up; from wind entering the heart, torch fire then shows up; from the heart entering the heart place, the moon appearance then shows up; from the heart entering delusion, the sun appearance then shows up; from delusion entering all emptiness, the Luohou appearance then shows up. From then on, all emptiness shows up like a sunny sky without clouds. Then the three present parts appear in reverse, i.e. all emptiness makes delusion arise, the heart place arises from delusion, the heart from the heart place and the heart with wind breath and the splendid body with all good appearances represented by the 12 illusory-like examples show up from in front of the self-achieving wisdom. Not only this, but also image any pure or impure world of sentient instruments seen in the three times are all detached from obstruction. From the special stage of the inner heart corresponding transcendent free performance is produced.
