Dying  for  the  Benefit  of  Living  Beings  Is  a  Sublimation  of  Life

Xuemo

The year before last, when I attended a seminar at Fudan University, I realized something. What did I realize? It was that there’s a great difference in people’s psyche between the eastern and the western regions. To what degree? For example, in one of my works, White Tiger’s Gate, there is a girl called Ying’er. She lives for love. Because of love, she is willing to endure countless sufferings and worries. So, she has clung to that hope in her heart all the time. One day, reality destroys her love, preventing her from realizing her love. She would rather die than marrying the butcher her family has chosen for her. People of the West think it’s a good thing that she is willing to die for love, which means a sublimation of the soul. In contrast, people of the East think that death is a suffering, a disaster. People of the Western Xia regime, which was contemporary with the Song dynasty, took their death for love to be a glorious thing. Besides, they regarded their death in battle also as a glory. So, when a girl in my work sacrifices herself for love, we western people think it’s a very good thing – she is sublimated and she is perfect. But eastern people don’t think it is good. Why? Because she ends her life rashly. You see, that’s where a sharp contrast occurs.

In addition, eastern and western people have different views about many other things. For lack of communication, they don’t understand each other. Although we belong to the same country, the western psyche and the eastern psyche are vastly different. I have a book called Hot Blood and Thick Soil, which is about dialogue between eastern and western cultures. It was compiled by He Yu from Shanghai based on our conversations. In this book, she compares “hot blood” to Wenzhou culture and “thick soil” to western culture. The analogies are very good. In fact, death is the most important thing in one’s life. For instance, Mao Zedong in “Serving the People” differentiates between deaths that are weightier than Mount Tai and deaths that are lighter than a feather. Thus, the cause of death determines the quality of our lives.

In the 1980s, there was a controversy in newspapers: a college student called Zhang Hua jumped into a cesspool to save an old farmer and lost his life. Many people were wondering if it was worth doing it I asked my son, “Do you think it is worthwhile for a college student like Zhang Hua to save an old farmer?” My son answered, “Of course! Although he lost his life, his spirit has been passed down.” Even today, when we think of Zhang Hua, we find that such a spirit still exists in our world and that we can still find people like him. He deserves our honor and our desire to learn from him. That is the value of his life. And that is exactly what western people will think.
