A Brief History of the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism sorts the meditation dharma of brightness into three types:

“1. Base status brightness: In these classifications, base status brightness should first be explained. This also calls the bright self nature of the hearts of living beings, which is the overlord of all dharma, the basic primitive brightness. There are many opinions for this due to wisdom: many masters in sutra section think of this as knowing self status by wisdom. Masters in Vijnanavadin argue that the wisdom that can acquire and acquires is self verification and self brightness. Those such as Holy Lion in the Madhyamika School took the true emptiness of the heart as the brightness of self nature, and then spoke about theories enabling it to become categories. End Dharma Wheel and its annotation Ratnagotravibhaga Mahayanottaratantra take the bright self nature of the heart and tathagatadhatu as one meaning. Therefore it is different from Vijnanavadin, which accepts alaya consciousness as contaminated no-mark. This explanation accepts alaya consciousness as kind dharma. Although there are many appearances, the dust of the nature of the heart is naturally pure. Therefore, it is called brightness (bright clean). Then, what is the difference between the brightness of self nature in the branches below Vijnanavadin? Ratnagotravibhaga Mahayanottaratantra states “tiny reason is not the status of listening, superior meaning is not the status of thought, the profound dharma nature therefore is not the status of meditation by people in the world”. This is saying that there is great difference in the status of meditation depending on whether one is ‘a person in the world’. In the deepest skilful path of Anuttara Yoga, the differences of the bright self nature of this heart are recognized as: having appearance is heart, the heart is self verification, self verification is great joy, the dual practice of great joy with emptiness. Due to obstructing dust, cause-vehicle advocates breaking outside appearance and then giving up the heart obsessed by it. However, Anuttara Yoga believes “The dust will disappear by itself because yogi can see the self nature of the heart. It is not advocated to eliminate dust after breaking outside appearance. For example, patients with gallbladder diseases see the white shell as yellow. Though they know it is white, the yellow they see does not extinguish. If gallbladder disease is eliminated, the perception of yellow will naturally cease.” The skill to brightly see this brightness of the self nature is as contained in Collective Essence Initial Section “like fire always staying in wood, break separate dharma is not seen, wearing with flint wood futon on hand, due to this opinion stay there, meditate and prove like this, the heart’s brightness is not seen, combining into one surrounding the river, therefore it can be seen as that.” This clearly states the very deep yoga of the perfection stage that by closely locking the wind hearts that can acquire and acquire in the left and right nadi inside central nadi, the heart’s brightness can be clearly seen. This is called the base status brightness, which is the self nature of the heart.”
