Regarding the meditation of brightness, Mr Liu Liqian states

“The brightness of the heart is innate and shows up at times whether or not you meditate or recognise it. Sentient beings cannot see it because of their negative karma. The bright achieving dharma is the dharma of meditating recognizing brightness. To see great brightness completely, very deep perfection stage is used to force karma wind into the central nadi, turning it into wisdom wind. Then the innate brightness can appear.”

“There are four opportunities should be grasped when meditating brightness: 1. deep sleep, when the six consciousnesses are not clear and gradually are withdrawn into alaya consciousness (Vinnana); 2. the dream state, where consciousness shows up with Samkara (Samkara); 3 general times, the image of the two obsessions, arising and ability, enter the consciousness, when consciousness is obvious (Sanna); 4. equal induction (i.e. enter concentration), when feeling re-birth (Vedana). Brightness shows up in all of the four opportunities, yogi can recognize it only through keys.”

“Grasp the four part statuses. Yogi can achieve the four bodies by grasping the place where the heart king lives and the activities of the heart consciousness and giving skilful treatment. When sleeping deeply, the heart king is at the heart, foolish sleep forces a swoon like state, the yogi can use Bright teaching to induce the dharma body. In the dream state the heart king is at the throat, with the appearance of wind moving or no wind moving, the Dream State teaching can be used to induce the reward body; generally, the heart king is in the navel wheel, raising all kinds of wrong ideas and real obsession, teachings of the Illusory body can be used to induce the manifested body; at equal induction, the heart king is at the top of the head, contaminated by greedy desire which is difficult to block, with the sanna of two combining roots, using mystic heat the great joy body can be induced. Also, there are five opportunities according to some classifications: general times, the dream state, re-birth (right before death), bardo, equal induction. A main consciousness plays a role in every part status. If one can recognize these five opportunities, their nature is the nature of the five wisdoms. Turning consciousness into wisdom can turn all confused situations arising in all part statuses into the function of Dao.”

“Brightness is the origin of all beings, therefore when meditating on brightness it is easy to stray. Because one does not understand that the bright nature is the nature of their own heart, they biasedly attach to the bright status. As the spiritual song of Milaripa states: if unenlightened that all dharma is one taste, meditating brightness becomes general perception; if unenlightened that the dual practice theory of great joy, visualizing emptiness becomes broken opinion.” (A Brief History of the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism)
