Mahamudra: Essence and Practice ( Book II)

Life: Tool for Mind Adjusting

Yixin Chen: You always say, life is the tool for mind calibration? How do we understand it?

●Xue Mo: My original words were, in the eyes of Mahamudra practitioners, the world is just a tool for mind calibration.

Everything in our daily life can be the tool for mind calibration. For instance, when drinking tea, you should feel the taste carefully, and melt your life into its fragrance, imagining your tongue becomes a black hole that dissolves all your greed, hatred and ignorance.

Japanese Tea Ceremony originates from Zen. When it reaches a higher realm, the process of drinking tea is equivalent to a sadhana drubtab. But if we can’t break the attachment, it will still be a worldly dharma, not a transcendent dharma. Another example, Taiji practice is also a ritual. It’s a ritual of physical action. If the practitioner can’t break the attachment with it, it will still be worldly dharma. What makes Tea ceremony and Taiji different from Mahamudra is that the formers can’t break attachment and obtain the “Seal”, can’t brought you the wisdom of brightness and emptiness.

When you obtain that wisdom of brightness and emptiness, and are capable of keeping the awareness and self-examination at every moment, what you should do is just to stay with the wisdom of brightness and emptiness. Furthermore, no matter what you do, you should just watch your move with eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and sense. That is to say, Mahamudra transforms every activities in life into rituals and methods for mind calibrating and concentration practice. When you think that, everything in the world are the manifestations of Yidam and Buddha, and you never leave the wisdom of brightness and emptiness, you will be on the way of the real practice. Staying in the emptiness is equivalent to practice of the Mahamudra. At the same time, you need to listen, what you hear is not an audible sound, but an inaudible one. That is, you need to taste the flavor of dharma and feel the happiness and calm. This happiness is not worldly pleasure, but to face the world happily, merge with the world into ‘one taste’ after enlightenment and relief from attachment. If you can do all of these, you’ll have no discrimination. Whether Buddha or devil come to you, you can always stay calm.

We should treat father or beggar as same as treating the Buddha, that’s to say we need to get rid of any discrimination. No matter what you are experiencing, keep yourself in the brightness and the emptiness, and feel it and enjoy it with your whole life. Don’t think it is not practice. As the matter of fact, it is the best one.

The original intentions of practice are: firstly, focus; secondly, attachment breaking. Focus refers to concentration. Attachment breaking refers to wisdom. When we have both of them and it is called unified practice of concentration and wisdom. Also, the brightness refers to wisdom, and emptiness refers to concentration, so when brightness and emptiness is unified, it’s also union of concentration and wisdom. It’s also true to the wisdom and mercy, which need to merge as well.

When you integrate yourself into the state of the brightness and emptiness, you will experience this dream-like world as in dream, you’ll no longer cling to anything; and just thinking what we do is for the Buddha and the Bodhisattva. At this moment, we must have our mind at ease. It feels like enjoying warm sunshine in winter, meanwhile we melt and dissolve all of our concerns and attachments.

Keeping in mind at all time that, don’t obsess by practice and also feel easy when you are not in practice. You should know that only thing that belongs to you is the wisdom, as well as the inner coolness, understanding, happiness and peace, nothing else belongs to you. I mean, this state is the most important in your life. Anything else needs to be melted into this state and, everything outside of your heart is only the assistance for mind calibration. Your heart, as the mirror, can reflect everything in this world, but the mirror is still, remain clear and clean all the time. In this state, you look everything as illusion, which will back into the emptiness eventually.

Don’t judge any one as silly or extremely ugly, instead, thinking them as the same and equal. In this bright equality, immeasurable merit will rise, there’s not event slight discrimination in your mind. This is a great state.

In your daily life, you need to practice as above, whether during and after meditation. For example, you should totally focus on cooking when you cook, totally concentrate on writing when you write.

Of course, you can use some Yoga skills to assist if you like. For example, while I am reading or writing, I hold the Aquarian gas and stay in brightness and emptiness.
