A Brief History of The Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism states
“The underlying principle of meditation is to know that the true appearance of all dharma is the brightness of self nature, therefore, the bright yoga becomes the essence of Dao. It is called brightness because the light of real phenomena has no obstruction and is obvious, or can show up freely though it has no self nature. If this is classified, there is the famous two brightness of allegory superior meaning, enlightenment brightness, the two brightness of day and night, the two brightness of thin and thick, and the two brightness of mother and stem. It can also be divided into four or five kinds, i.e. self nature brightness, Samadhi brightness, obvious but nothing proved brightness and superior meaning brightness, according to Brief Five Steps. One Taste Vajra Collective Explanation lists them as five types: the revealed self nature brightness, the revealing entering sleep brightness, habituation Dao status brightness, patisandhi right before death brightness and fruit status dharma body brightness. Later Part Jia Bai states “this brightness has five kinds: self nature brightness, wisdom brightness, samaya brightness, enlightened brightness; there are five times: when dying and living middle, equal holding and during regression, concentrate to form one taste, this is the time to enlighten exceptional visualization”. This shows that there are many sayings about the classification of the five kinds of brightness and their appearance. Generally, the basic status dharma nature leaving far from the edge of always breaking is situation brightness, mastering the opposite situation as real is having situation brightness. Because this opinion set-up is present in both obvious and secret vehicles, it is called general meaning brightness. That spoken of in Anuttara Yoga is named hidden meaning brightness. There are also many classifications established using different names. For example wisdom brightness arising from empowerment and brightness in the creation stage is analogy brightness, while upright brightness arises from all perfection stages. Here brightness refers to a kind of exceptional superior-meaning brightness showing in front. Then the brightness appearing due to the upright illusory body and analogy by the two quiet contemplations is brightness with or without study. Nothing is more superior than this brightness.”
