Cuoru Cilang talked about three kinds of strategies in A Brief History of the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism:
1) Wind yoga. Firmly close what carries the heart outside—the unwavering major root and branch wind of the stately invention of the three realms and the sentient instrument what the foundations of all strategic and liberation paths depend on. Therefore, how can this be meditated as yoga? It mainly meditates treasure bottle Qi merged in the navel from upper and lower winds by the four preliminary practices and five keys, because Lüsheng states “the upper and lower floating winds, let them be merged by the mind, meditating this yoga, firm real status will be obtained.” There are four ways of using this method to recall wind: one, each finger wide breath becoming shorter when exhaling is amount recall hold; two, reduced inhaling is number recall; three, exhalation becoming gentle is tense recall; four, staying long in the former place between navel and not floating outward is merit recall. The first three happens in some animals, therefore they are not real. The last one is the real wind recall, because from this experience can arise in the inner heart. The four preliminary practices in this are as stated by Later Separate Jiabai:
Breathe in, fill, and extinguish, and like shooting arrows these four kinds. If the four preliminary practices are not known, merits achieved are more than misconduct. The five essential keys are: the key of dismissal is that breath does not return, the key of inhaling is to hold in the original place, the key of filling is to subdue, the key of extinguishing is to cultivate in the nadi and the key of shooting is merging inside and outside.
