Summary:

A suffering story of the ordinary farmers in the west, the novel presents the harsh living condition of the contemporary western farmers.

On the edge of the Tengger Desert in western China, there is a small village named as Sandy Bay, A man named Lao Shun, had three sons and a daughter. For supporting his brother to school, the eldest son HanTou had to leave school early to sell labors. The second son Mengzi is not good at study, also left school to work in agriculture. The youngest son LingGuan graduating from agricultural school did not go to college, and returned home. Because of poverty, HanTou cannot afford to marry a wife, Lao Shun made a deal with a neighbor to get HanTou marry Ying’er, the neighbor’s daughter, and then get LanLan, his draught to marry to BaiFu, the neighbor’s son.  Married, LanLan gave birth to a daughter, BaiFu has gambling habit, also beat his wife, LanLan's marriage is most unfortunate. Ying’er is the "Flower Fairy" of the village, she fell in love with LingGuan. HanTou, a decade ago to save a drowning girl, jumped into the icy water, made some unspeakable disease, and he had strong self-esteeming before Ying’er, soon after the marriage, he was suffering from liver cancer , the family run out the money for treatment, dying. LingGuan cannot afford a conscience, away from home. Yinger gave birth to her son and LingGuan and waiting LingGuan to come back became her reason to live.
