Summary:

The novel tells the soul anxiety of farmer of the western rural areas under the context of rapid change and the tide of commercial development.

A gold mine was discovered in a road named as Niu Lu Slope in the western desert, people flock from the surrounding villages, and the small place becomes a small town, rural areas face enormous social change, both the faith and songs named Flower of thousands of years were drowned by the noise of machines. The old value system is facing collapse, the squeeze of the thirst of the soul and the reality are both inquiring on this ancient land. The novel’s main line is the three women LanLan, Ying’er, and Yue’er’story suffering life and self-redemption, reveals the predicament facing contemporary rural agricultural civilization revolution to industrial civilization, the transition process and the pains.

LanLan was not obedient to his fate as repeating her father’s life, divorces with BaiFu, and seeks to find the soul from the Buddhist faith.  Mengzi is unwilling to accept poverty and ignorance, also joins the gold mining rush team, due to well collapse he was buried at the bottom, almost killed; Ying’er is still waiting LingGuan’s return, she wants to be waiting for her Pure Land, but the mother forces her to marry the butcher, she commits suicide swallowing gold in desperation; Yue’er in order to jump out of the farm gate, goes to the city to work, catch a sexually transmitted disease, after the marriage of her and MengZi, two lovers’ affection cannot prevent the deterioration of sexually transmitted diseases, Yue’er goes to the desert alone, ended her young life in the fire ...
